A first sewing machine has two jobs. It has to be easy enough that threading and winding a bobbin do not end the hobby in week one, and capable enough that you do not outgrow it after one year of tote bags and pillow covers. The cheapest machines often fail the second test. The features that matter most for a beginner are boring ones: a built-in needle threader, a top drop-in bobbin you can see through, a one-step buttonhole instead of a four-step one, and enough feed dogs to move fabric evenly. Free arm and drop feed are what let you grow into sleeves and free-motion quilting. This guide compares seven machines priced from about $200 to $400 on exactly those points, using what each Amazon listing states. Where a listing leaves out something you need, such as the feed dog count, we say so.
