Heavy duty and specialty

A heavy duty home machine has a metal frame and a stronger motor, which helps with denim and canvas. Leather, upholstery and many layers need a walking foot machine or an industrial machine with a servo motor.

Denim and canvas needle
Jeans 90/14 to 110/18
Upholstery thread
bonded nylon or polyester

On a home machine, heavy duty usually means a metal internal frame, a stronger motor and higher presser foot lift. It sews jeans hems and canvas bags well with the right needle and a slower speed, but it is not built for continuous thick leather.

Semi-industrial straight-stitch machines sew one stitch very well and very fast, with more throat space and a stronger feed. Industrial walking foot machines with a compound feed move thick layers of leather, vinyl and upholstery without shifting.

Match the needle and thread to the job: a Jeans needle for denim and canvas, a Leather wedge-point needle for real leather, and bonded nylon or polyester thread for upholstery and leather. The needle and thread finder gives the size range for each fabric.

Common mistakes

  • Sewing thick seams at full speed and breaking needles on the hump.
  • Using a leather needle on vinyl or woven fabric, where it cuts instead of parting the fibers.
  • Buying an industrial machine without room for its table and motor.
